Pulling It Together
Organize Your Money
Everyone wants to be more organized, but for most of us the motivation is simply to have a tidier home or office. Another equally important reason to get organized is to save money.
Being smart with your money is always a good idea, but it becomes essential when every headline warns of an economic downturn. Fortunately there are a few basic money management changes you can make that will serve you well no matter what the state of the economy.
Keeping your hard-earned cash may be just the incentive you need to get and stay organized.
-
Organize Your Bills - Late fees and finance charges are little expenses that can add up fast. Avoid missing a due date by opening your mail in the same place each day. Put bills-to-be-paid in a dedicated basket, a Jane Marvel Pouch, or a See Jane Work Financial Organizer so they don't get misplaced or forgotten. The Financial Organizer allows you to sort by month to further ensure you won't miss a scheduled payment.
-
Organize Your Receipts - Tax time has just passed, but you may still be finding tax deductible receipts from last year. While a shoebox might work well for some, the Receipt Catcher is a bit more sophisticated. It allows you to easily categorize your receipts and the convenient size makes it easy to store. Keep it in your glove box, desk drawer, brief case, or on the kitchen counter. If you keep it in your car you can use the next long car ride (when you're not the driver) to empty your wallet and organize receipts. If you prefer to stash it in your desk drawer, take some time each day to clean out your wallet or purse and organize your receipts.
-
Organize Your Errands - Frequent trips to the store can put you over budget. Each time you walk in the store it is highly likely you will leave with more than what you came for. With gas prices at a record high, limiting the amount of time you spend in your car is good for both the environment and your wallet. Keep track of errands on the Errand Pad. Plan a route and use lists like the Shopping List to make sure you get everything you need in one trip.
-
Organize Your Finances - Take the time to make a list of all your recurring bills, including account numbers and the phone number to call for customer service. The Money Log is a great tool for tracking payments, account balances, and expenses.
The time you spend on record-keeping and planning will pay off in the form of money saved on account fees, interest, tax deductions, and gas for your car. Getting the piles of statements, receipts, and random to-do lists off your desk is just an added bonus.
